Weight Clinic

Is my pet overweight, underweight, a bit chubby or just right?

Our pets come in various shapes and sizes so it is the duty of the owner to ensure their pets’ body condition is ideal. Each pet should be assessed as an individual and should not be directly compared with another, even if it is of the same breed. Breed Average Weight Charts only give the calculated AVERAGE weight of a specific breed this is not what your pet should weigh! Your pets’ ideal weight depends on his size, shape and body composition (how much fat/ muscle). This can be easily determined by simply looking at and feeling your pet and knowing/ understanding what size is ideal. Obesity is a growing problem in both cats and dogs and increases the likelihood of your pet developing arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and respiratory conditions. With as many as 50% of Britain’s cats and dogs being overweight, pet owners often do not realise that their pet is overweight or even clinically obese.

Too many treats, incorrect meal portions and not enough exercise are the main factors resulting in overweight/ obese pets. Knowing how much food your pet requires daily and the calorific effects of treats is a great starting point.
